We were very proud to contribute to the meeting of the intercontinental collaborative network International Palm Oil Workers United (IPOWU) in Colombia. Motivated trade union representatives from the palm oil industry in Colombia, Indonesia, and Ghana, as well as FNV members from Lidl Netherlands and Cargill, came together for constructive and valuable exchanges.
Participants at the event
On the first day, we focused on the results of our joint research into the use of agrochemicals in the palm oil industry. These findings highlight urgent issues, such as the lack of awareness among workers regarding the health risks relating to pesticides and fertilisers. A major concern is that chemicals prohibited in Europe are still being used in Indonesia. This is an unfair situation that needs to be addressed immediately.
The second day was centred around developing a joint strategy to improve the health and safety of workers who handle these hazardous substances. A major first step would be to make European buyers more aware of the risks these chemicals pose to plantation workers. Current policies often focus solely on productivity and biodiversity, while not enough attention is paid to the serious risks facing the people who work on the plantations.
It was inspiring to engage in these discussions with such a dedicated group of trade union leaders who are determined to improve working conditions throughout the supply chain. As Mondiaal FNV, we will continue to support our partners in this fight for improvements in the global palm oil chain.
